With the old checkpatch we cannot use the correct format for the
SPDX tags in the file .c, in fact the C99 comments are not allowed
and we had to use the block comment.
With the new checkpatch, let's switch to the correct SPDX format.

Replace the FSF boilerplate with the SPDX tag.
The SPDX tag on files *.c is incorrect, as it should use the C99
single line comment using '//'. But current checkpatch doesn't
allow C99 comments, so keep using standard C comments, by now.

Line continuation, adding a backslash as last char of the line, is
requested in multi-line macro definition, but is not necessary in
the rest of C code.
Remove it where present.
Identified by checkpatch script from Linux kernel v5.1 using the
command

According to the standard every operation returns at least an integer,
so PRIu8 format specifier is not suitable for these values as is.
This breaks build on OS X (x86_64-apple-darwin13.0.0) with "Apple LLVM
version 5.0 (clang-500.2.79) (based on LLVM 3.3svn)".
Fix by adding appropriate casts. In fact there's plenty of room (and
I'd say necessity) for factoring out common code in there, but it's
too invasive for a non-maintainer.
